Motorcycle enthusiasts invest large amounts of time, energy and money in their rides. They want to protect that investment. After all, for many, riding is a way of life.

Motorcycle riders should always take precautions to prevent theft and damage to their cycles. In addition to taking these measures, bikers also should purchase the right kind and the right amount of motorcycle insurance.

Every biker should have a good insurance policy. Motorcycle insurance can and should cover more than just theft or collisions.

Some Companies that Carry Motorcycle Insurance

  • Allstate
  • Markel American Insurance Company
  • Geico
  • Progressive

Before making a decision as to which insurance company to use, a wise motorcycle owner will do some research and obtain a few insurance quotes from companies that insure motorcycles. Anyone interested in insuring a motorcycle can obtain a quote online in about a minute. Policies can even be purchased online, 24 hours a day.

A responsible rider will insure a cycle with the proper coverage. The right amount of insurance coverage will provide some protection against the financial loss that results from a motorcycle theft or accident, but it won’t make up for other kinds of loss, such as time and energy invested in a custom motorcycle or the emotional attachment to a bike. Unfortunately, nothing can replace those.

Avoiding the need to File a Claim

To protect the time and care invested in a bike, an enthusiast needs more than just insurance. A biker needs knowledge on how to avoid needing to file an insurance claim. The following may help a motorcyclist keep from needing to file an insurance claim:

  • Protective gear
  • Defensive driving
  • Theft prevention practices
  • Anti-theft devices
  • Tracking and recovery devices

Anti-theft devices not only reduce the chance of theft, but they also lower the cost of insurance premiums. Users can get a discount on their insurance for using an anti-theft device. Some companies advertise a discount of up to 20% on motorcycle insurance premiums for passive devices, and some offer a discount of up to 35% for a combination of devices.

Insurance providers are happy to provide information on how a customer can avoid needing to file a claim. Insurance companies have a strong interest in helping customers protect their insured vehicles. Insurance companies don't want motorcycles to be stolen or damaged any more than owners do.

A check from an insurance company cannot compensate for the time and energy spent turning a standard bike into a custom beauty. Receiving a claim check for the covered amount (which depends on the specific policy) won't really replace a beloved bike, but at least it can get a biker back on the road.
