Review: 2007 BMW R1200S
The ABS system used on the 2007 BMW R1200S is an upgraded 2-channel configuration without an integral function or brake servo and adds only 3.3 lb to the overall weight of the machine.
The new extra-light ABS is an option but probably most bikes will come with it anyway. It's disconnectable in case you want to use the bike under assumed-risk situations.
Some other options are heated grips, tire pressure monitoring, on-board computer, anti-theft alarm, and wide, 6-inch rear wheel.
The up-swept exhaust system is routed under the pillion seat just below the tail light that's composed of 18 LEDs.
The central and front sections of the tubular frame structure are made of steel, while the rear frame, bolted in place, is made of extra-light square aluminum tubes. The advantages of this structure are not only low-weight, but also low-cost repair in case of rear damage.
The rider is able to retrieve and call up lots of information on the Info-Flatscreen. For example, the digital display presents the current gear selected, the amount of fuel left in the tank, current oil temperature, the time of day, and the range remaining on the fuel still in the tank. And to present all this information clearly, a photo-cell control unit takes ambient light conditions into account, automatically adjusting the instrument light intensity.
If you want to put any serious long-distance-trip mileage on the R1200S, there isn't much room for storage. A tank bag and a sport soft bag are about all that's offered.
In recent years, BMW has chosen to evolve its more traditional Boxers into new models with "sporting character." In the R1200S they've produced a bike with the most powerful Boxer engine to date. Furthermore, they've created a platform for the rider to enjoy that power.
BMW is producing more motorcycles that appeal to sportier riders. Are you a sportier rider? Maybe it's time to see if the R1200S is the bike for you.
